Liz Hingley is an artist and anthropologist, born and raised in Birmingham, a UK city home to over 180 nationalities. Her interdisciplinary practice blends photography, sculpture and curation to illuminate and explore systems of belonging and belief that shape societies around the world. Grounded in ongoing conversations and collaboration with the people and places that her projects relate to, her works draw on the connections between languages, technology, and generations. She is the author of five books.
Liz founded The SIM Project in 2017 and is currently Artist in Residence at Kings College London. She has also held positions at Fudan University, Shanghai, The Migration Research Centre, University College London and SOAS University.

Boris Eldagsen: Photography vs. Promptography - Friends or Foes?
In April 2023, Eldagsen turned down the Sony World Photography Awards (Open Category /Creative) and admitted that he had applied with an AI-generated image to initiate a debate about the relationship between AI-generated images and photography. The stunt became worldwide news and his image THE ELECTRICIAN one of the most famous of the year.
Join us on Tuesday, September 12, at 6 p.m. for this special free online guest lecture with internationally celebrated artist and AI expert Boris Eldagsen examining the challenges and opportunities recent technological advancements present to photography. Community Photography Workshop with Houston Center for Photography
The Walter Hopps Color Photography Workshop is a day-long beginner to intermediate community education program that will take place during The Curatorial Imagination of Walter Hopps exhibition taking place between March 24 to August 13, 2023 at the Menil Collection. Participants will have the opportunity to view the works of famous photographers during the exhibition. They will mainly focus on four photographs within the exhibition which are Church Sprott, Alabama, 1971 by William Christenberry, Church Sprott, Alabama, 1936 by Walker Evans, Coleman's Cafe, Greensboro, Alabama, 1971 by William Christenberry, and Roadside Store, Vicinity Selma, Alabama (Alabama Countryside), 1936 by Walker Evans.
They will take note of the subject matter, style, composition, similarities, and differences between each photograph and think about the idea of reference in one’s own artistic vision. The participants will then work to emulate this style of photography in the outside surrounding area of The Menil Collection, giving them a chance to learn through hands-on experience and imitation. They will think about their immediate place and environment, color, architecture, composition, and art reference. HCP Instructors will provide feedback and constructive criticism to all the work created.

Saturday, June 24 – 11:00-3:30 pm: Tour of Walter Hopps Exhibition with Clare Elliott, the Menil Collection Associate Research Curator ; Lunch break; Lecture at HCP followed by photography workshop on The Menil Collection grounds.
Exhibition: Online exhibition on HCP ACE website.
Workshop Requirements: The participants need to bring their own camera and camera equipment. All camera types are welcome, including phone cameras. The participants are responsible for submitting their digital images for the online exhibition.

The Center Annual exhibition at the Houston Center for Photography, formerly known as the Juried Members Exhibition, serves as a vibrant celebration of the artistry and transformative power of photography. This year’s exhibition, juried by Lisa Volpe, Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, invites viewers to explore beyond the familiar boundaries of the image and its subject matter; to investigate beyond our own preconceived notions of what it’s like to exist in an ever-changing world.
By welcoming photographers from around the world, regardless of their level of experience, The 40th Center Annual offers viewers a critical insight into the current state of photography and its broader significance in today's society. It is an opportunity to delve into diverse approaches and styles that interrogate history, question social structures, delve into personal memories, and reshape our perception of reality.
Collaborations is an Access and Community Education program that celebrates photography and encourages cooperation and teamwork between Houston-area high school students as they create an exhibition from beginning to end and learn about various professional paths related to photography and lens-based art.
This year Collaborations celebrates its twentieth anniversary. Through a partnership between Open Dance Project and the Houston Center for Photography, the students were invited to research and select images from 1968 to base their work on. They were then to produce a body of images in reaction to their findings and the similarities between current events and those that occurred in the late sixties, resulting in an exhibition of their work in our gallery.
Our Collaborations students’ photographs reflect on our nation’s histories, and equally, provide us with a glimpse into each students’ visual understanding of their very contemporary worlds.
Collaborations XX will culminate in a Print Sale on Saturday, June 24 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. There will be a short presentation of Collaborations and the 1968 Project at 2:00 PM followed by the Print Sale. Prospective buyers will be able to ask questions to the students about their 1968 body of work along with purchasing prints, of which will include a wider selection of the students’ various bodies of work.
Walter Hopps Zeitgeist Advanced Photography Workshop
The Walter Hopps Zeitgeist Photography Workshop is a month-long advanced community education program, with two in-person workshops, that will take place during The Curatorial Imagination of Walter Hopps exhibition taking place between March 24 to August 13, 2023 at the Menil Collection. Adult participants that have a strong understanding of photography will have the opportunity to view the works of famous photographers during the exhibition. They will focus on three photographers within the exhibition, which are Walker Evans, William Eggleston, and William Christenberry.
Dealing with the theme of “zeitgeist” meaning “the defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time,” the participants will observe and think about the zeitgeist that these three photographers mentioned above portrayed in their own work. They will then be given an assignment to photograph their own zeitgeist happening today while comparing and contrasting traditional photography with modern photographic stylistic conventions. Participants will get a chance to think outside of the box and challenge themselves by comparing historical photographers with modern photography. They will think about their place in the environment, culture, time period, and learn to communicate their vision through their work and an exhibition at HCP’s Education Gallery. HCP Instructors will provide feedback and constructive criticism to all the work created giving the participants a chance to hone in on their ideas to the fullest.

Photography Workshop Schedule:
Day 1 – Saturday May 13, 2023 – 11am-4pm: Tour of Walter Hopps Exhibition with Clare Elliott, the Menil Collection Associate Research Curator; Lunch break; Intensive photography workshop at HCP with project assignment.
Day 2 – Saturday June 3, 2023 – 1-4pm: In-person critique meeting at HCP.
Two Week project development with finalized project and prints due Sunday June 18, 2023.
Exhibition August 9-20, 2023: HCP Education Gallery
Workshop Requirements:
The participants need to bring their own camera and camera equipment. Cameras with manual settings are preferred. The participants will be responsible for printing their work for the exhibition.

Book Signing w/ Ada Trillo
Houston Center for Photography (HCP) is pleased to announce an Artist Panel with Ada Trillo + Book Signing event on Friday, April 21, 2023 from 6:00 P.M. - 8 P.M. The panel discussion will feature Ada Trillo and Elena Korbut, Executive Director of PAIR, and will be facilitated by André Ramos-Woodard, HCP's Exhibitions and Program Coordinator, and Anne Leighton Massoni, HCP's Executive Director.
Ada Trillo will discuss her first monograph, La Caravana Del Diablo, a series of photographs that make visible the migrant caravans traveling through Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico since 2020.
