Madre Patria is an exploration of my time in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2024. It was my first time outside of the country, yet it felt so much like home. That sense of familiarity guided my process and inspired me to document my time there. We spent most of our days in the pueblo of Aquiles Serdán, where my family had volunteered to contribute tamales for the festival honoring the town's patron saint, Señor Santiago. The more time we spent there, the deeper my connection to my motherland grew. I found myself drawn to the simplicity of life in the pueblo and the profound sense of community that held it all together. This project culminated in a zine also titled Madre Patria, collecting the photographs I took throughout my time in Mexico.
Growing up on the southwest side of Houston, Texas, I experienced a rich blend of cultures that shaped my perspective. This cultural diversity is central to my work, as I aim to highlight Black and Brown communities in a positive light, offering a counter-narrative to their often-negative portrayals while showcasing the more intimate aspects of Latinx life. Throughout my journey as a photographer, I have been deeply drawn to themes of culture and heritage. Through documentary photography, I explore both my personal history and the wider community around me, preserving traditions, rituals, and everyday moments that might otherwise go unseen. Rooted in my Mexican heritage, my goal is to create an authentic and grounded portrait of Latinx life, one that honors where we come from and celebrates who we are.

Madre Patria es una exploración de mi tiempo en Oaxaca, México, en 2024. Fue la primera vez que salí del país, y sin embargo se sintió muy parecido a estar en casa. Esa sensación de familiaridad guió mi proceso e inspiró mi deseo de documentar mi estancia allí. Pasamos la mayor parte de nuestros días en el pueblo de Aquiles Serdán, donde mi familia se ofreció como voluntaria para contribuir con tamales para el festival en honor al santo patrono del pueblo, el Señor Santiago. Cuanto más tiempo pasábamos allí, más profunda se volvía mi conexión con mi tierra madre. Me sentí atraído por la simplicidad de la vida en el pueblo y por el profundo sentido de comunidad que lo mantenía todo unido. Este proyecto culminó en un fanzine también titulado Madre Patria, que reúne las fotografías que tomé durante mi tiempo en México.
Al crecer en el lado suroeste de Houston, Texas, experimenté una rica mezcla de culturas que dio forma a mi perspectiva. Esta diversidad cultural es fundamental en mi trabajo, ya que busco destacar a las comunidades negras y morenas desde una perspectiva positiva, ofreciendo una contranarrativa a sus representaciones a menudo negativas, al mismo tiempo que muestro los aspectos más íntimos de la vida latina. A lo largo de mi trayectoria como fotógrafo, me he sentido profundamente atraído por temas de cultura y herencia. A través de la fotografía documental, exploro tanto mi historia personal como la de la comunidad que me rodea, preservando tradiciones, rituales y momentos cotidianos que de otro modo podrían pasar desapercibidos. Simon Silva is a Houston-based photographer whose work explores themes of race, spirituality, and beauty. He focuses on portraiture and street photography, capturing raw, candid moments that reveal the complexities of everyday life. Silva’s images invite viewers to reflect on the connections between identity and experience, showcasing the beauty and depth in the people and places around him. As a BIPOC man and the son of a Mexican immigrant, Silva draws deeply from his lived experience. This perspective has become an increasingly powerful influence in his recent work, shaping both his subjects and the stories he chooses to tell. His photography is rooted in authenticity—finding those real, unfiltered moments that resonate beyond aesthetics. Each image aims to provoke thought and inspire deeper conversations around culture, belonging, and the shared human experience.
