This introductory course provides students with a practical foundation in Capture One, a professional software application used for organizing, editing, and processing digital photographs. Students will learn how to import and organize images, create catalogs and sessions, make exposure and color adjustments, work with layers and masks, apply lens corrections, and prepare files for print, web, or client delivery.
Classes will combine instructor demonstrations, guided exercises, and hands-on assignments using students’ own photographs. Attention will also be given to developing an efficient and repeatable workflow, including file naming, metadata, backups, and exporting. This course is ideal for photographers, digital technicians, and visual artists who are new to Capture One or who want to build greater confidence managing and editing their images.
Objectives:
Navigate the Capture One interface and customize the workspace for an efficient editing workflow
Import, organize, rate, and manage image files using catalogs, sessions, albums, and metadata
Make foundational adjustments to exposure, contrast, white balance, color, and image sharpness
Use layers, masks, and local adjustment tools to refine specific areas of an image
Apply lens corrections, crop images, and prepare photographs for print, web, or client delivery
Develop a consistent workflow for file organization, editing, exporting, and image backup
Prerequisites:
Students should have basic computer skills and a general understanding of digital photography, including exposure, file types, and image resolution. Familiarity with a digital camera and experience transferring photographs to a computer are recommended. No editing or prior Capture One experience is required. Students should have access to a laptop with a current version of Capture One installed.
Course Prep:
Before the first class, students should install and activate the current version of Capture One on their laptop and confirm that the program opens and runs properly. Students should bring a selection of 10-15 RAW image files to use during demonstrations and exercises, along with any necessary card readers, external drives, and power adapters. It is also recommended that students organize their images into a clearly labeled folder and back up all files before class.
