Have you started working on a new photographic series? Have you been wanting to explore a certain subject but aren’t sure how to start? Developing an interesting fine art series can captivate us for months or even years, yet many wonderful ideas and concepts remain in the initial phase without the help of an interlocutor. How do we embrace short and long-term endeavors? How do we break down the larger context into important details and nuances? What should we commit to in the process of developing a project? This critique-based course guides students along the process of translating inspiration and analysis into a strategic approach and breaking it down into references, semiotics, and symbols that will serve as tools for realizing their fine art series. We will go from defining your concepts and narrative to building a statement, designing a workflow, and developing your project.
Objectives:
Work on developing a personal fine art series
Examine the relevance of ideas and concepts
Learn how to write a statement for your work
Receive guidance in finding and approaching references
Analyze and prioritize your photographic strategy and artistic language
Apply a workflow for working on your project
Present your work in progress and receive important constructive feedback
Prerequisites:
Photography II or being comfortable using your camera in Manual mode. Having some experience with editing and/or processing images is a plus.
Course Prep:
For the first class, please prepare a selection of 10-20 pictures representing your work and be ready to discuss ideas/concepts for the series you’d like to work on during the course.
