The Monochrome Image is a course designed for photographers eager to expand their practice through the expressive possibilities of black and white image making. Far from simply removing color, monochrome photography invites a deeper exploration of light, shadow, texture, form, and emotion. Through critiques, assignments, and discussions of historical and contemporary photographers, students will experiment with new approaches to image making while developing a distinct photographic voice. Topics will include tonal relationships, contrast, sequencing, editing, and the role of black and white in contemporary photographic practice. Emphasizing personal vision and visual storytelling, this course encourages students to create thoughtful, compelling images that communicate with clarity and intention.
Objectives:
Experiment with a range of photographic approaches to develop a personal visual style and expand individual creative practice
Analyze and discuss photographic work through critiques, demonstrating the ability to articulate conceptual intentions and provide constructive feedback
Edit, sequence, and curate photographs into bodies of work that communicate a clear narrative or conceptual framework
Examine the work of historical and contemporary photographers to understand the aesthetic, cultural, and conceptual significance of monochrome photography
Produce a final portfolio of monochrome photographs that demonstrates technical skill and conceptual development
Prerequisites:
Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Lightroom Classic.
Course Prep:
Students should email the instructor a PDF with examples of their work including 10-15 images.
