This practical course engages with ideas related to the “reassemblage of images”. From both conceptual and material perspectives, students will approach strategies like montage, collage, color, appropriation, text and sound as ways of reconceptualizing images for critical approaches. We will ask questions such as “What does it mean to cut an image?” and explore how alterations of color or archives can transform traditional understanding and meaning of particular images. Patriciapants will engage with the critical potential of questioning pictures through images themselves. Film, photography and the photobook are addressed from their expanded potential, as a way to develop creative, critical approaches to images.

Objectives:

• Further your understanding of the “photographic image”

• Gain familiarity with strategies for creative, critical image making including montage, collage, color and appropriation.

• Develop your visual literacy from critical approaches

• Gain familiarity with strategies of collage and appropriation through practical assignments

• Create new exciting work expanding your artistic practice

Prerequisites:
Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop is a plus.

Course Prep:
Please prepare a group or series of images that you might like to intervene with. You may include pictures from your own archive, family albums, newspapers, magazines, or the internet.
