Skill Level: Intermediate-Advanced

Portfolio Reviews, first pioneered in Houston by FOTOFEST forty years ago, have become the premier professional platform for photographers to share their work with industry leaders. They provide invaluable opportunities to receive expert feedback, build meaningful professional connections, and open doors to exhibitions, magazine features, online platforms, book publications, gallery representation, and print sales. While attending a portfolio review can be both intense and deeply rewarding, success requires careful preparation to present your work at its best and fully realize its potential.

This hands-on workshop is designed to help you strengthen every aspect of your presentation—from editing and sequencing to portfolio structure and reviewer engagement. Together, we’ll address essential questions: How should you present your work, and why? What belongs in your portfolio? Is your edit and sequence strong, or could it be sharper? How do you make the most of limited time in a review? Which reviewers should you prioritize, and how do you rank them strategically? Gain the insight, strategies, and confidence you need to approach upcoming portfolio reviews with clarity and purpose.

Objectives:

  • Understand how to present your work professionally during portfolio reviews

  • Get a feel for a real meeting and practice your presentation

  • Improve the edit and sequence of one body of work

  • Discuss potential reviewers and fine tune your preferences/rankings

  • Receive valuable tips for maximizing potential opportunities

Prerequisites:

Students must have a portfolio they wish to present at portfolio reviews with at least one body of work of 20 pictures or more.

Course Prep:

Participants must bring their portfolio to class, preferably in the format they intend to present at portfolio reviews. Students planning to attend PHOTO NOLA 2025 and/or FOTOFEST 2026 should research and rank available reviewers and be ready to discuss their choices in class.
