This informative and inspirational workshop introduces students to new techniques and tools for close-up and macro (extreme close-up) photography using inexpensive lenses (on DSLR or mirrorless cameras), point-and-shoot cameras, or smartphones. Participants will learn how to photograph with a normal lens in combination with various close-up filters, magnifiers, or plastic lenses while reviewing compositions and controlling exposures. Students will receive a historic overview of close-up photography, demonstrations of set-ups and techniques, and a critique of images discussing technical, compositional, and artistic aspects.
Objectives:
Review standard macro and close-up photography equipment (cameras and lenses)
Learn how to creatively use inexpensive alternatives, including close-up filters, extension tubes, reversing and coupling rings, focusing rail, and much more
Get creative with controlling natural light using inexpensive plastic objects, reflective foils, black boxes, and flashlights
Improve your understanding of light metering leading to better exposures
Discuss aesthetic and technical considerations of image-making
Prerequisites: None
Course Prep:
Please have your camera and lens at your disposal as well as a notepad and pen. Students must know how to take screenshots of their computer screens in advance of taking this course.
