Understanding Light Metering and Exposure (Jun 23)

In this informative workshop, participants focus on creating accurately exposed images by understanding light conditions and applying correct approaches while photographing. We will review the physics of light, learn about light metering with handheld and/or in-camera light meters, use Indirect and direct metering (spot, evaluative, or selective metering), and discuss how to calculate the correct exposure in normal and extreme light conditions.  Additional topics include the zone system, exposure values, and the Histogram. Participants will review examples and partake in analyzing various images in relation to the lighting conditions in which they were taken.

Objectives:

• Improve your understanding of light metering and exposure 

• Learn about the different types of light meters and metering modes

• Understand the Histogram and how to use it while photographing

• Control the light in your pictures using aperture, shutter speed, and ISO 

• Review simplified and full zone systems for monochrome and color 

• Practice metering to zone 5 and expose accordingly 

• Meter to non-medium zones and learn to calculate the correct exposure

Prerequisites: 

Photography I or working knowledge of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings 

Course Prep: 

Please be ready to take notes during the workshop. Participants are encouraged to have their light meters and/or DSLR or mirrorless cameras available in order to practice during the workshop and/or ask questions about their equipment.
