Sol Diaz - Bi(Breath)
This is an offering from a traveler, not an expert.
In this inaugural work, Diaz-Peña invites you to their first visit to the Vela de las Intrépidas Buscadoras del Peligro, an annual celebration of the Muxe community of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Through black-and-white photographs, illustrations, and personal anecdotes, Diaz-Peña documents their experience visiting the Muxe: the sacred third-gender Indigenous community of the Zapotec people of Oaxaca.
At the core of this journey is Rematriation: the spiritual process of recovering Indigenous knowledge and returning to the ‘womb’ of one’s ancestry. With the humility of a Mexican-American who was welcomed back, Diaz-Peña offers this work as a love letter to queer and trans people with roots across the Americas—and a bridge for the allies who walk beside them.
