This course will dive into photography as a powerful medium for personal expression, explicitly focusing on the artists' personal environment. Through a combination of classroom discussions and immersive, hands-on practical exercises, students will embark on a journey that explores how photography can capture and convey their unique perspective. 

Together, we will review captivating works of influential photographers who have mastered the art of visual storytelling to communicate their personal narratives. By delving into their portfolios, students will gain insight into their creative processes and learn how to harness the power of imagery to share personal experiences and perspectives. 

Throughout the course, students will engage in individual shooting assignments and participate in group critiques and discussions. These collaborative sessions will provide a nurturing and supportive environment, enabling students to share their work, receive constructive feedback, and engage in meaningful conversations with their peers. 

Objectives:

  • Understand and define the main narrative, concepts, or ideas of your project

  • Draft your initial artist statement

  • Research and plan your personal project 

  • Create a comprehensive shoot list as a guideline for your series

  • Develop your editing skills improving your existing and future portfolios

  • Expand your artistic background and gain insight into your creative process

Prerequisites:

Photography II or being comfortable using your camera in Manual mode.

Course Prep:

Please bring to the first class a written proposal for a new or in-progress project and a selection of relevant images (if available). Submission instructions will be emailed prior to the start of the course.
