Skill Level: Open to All Levels
Throughout history, the album cover has been just as important as the music itself. Beyond brand identity for musicians and bands, the album art introduces viewers to a cultural moment. Album art conveys the sound, feel, mood, emotions and sometimes, the politics of a given body of work. In this collage workshop, we are imagining ourselves as the musician or bandleader in need of a visual vessel for our sonic landscapes.
In “Album Cover”, instructor and artist Tay Butler demonstrates this connection between visual art and music, giving a brief history of album covers, and using famous examples of album covers that explored collage as its methodology. Participants will see real-world examples of collage album covers created by Tay Butler, and use the methodology and materials needed to make album cover collages. In a hands-on environment, each participant will leave with a permanent collage of their own, displaying a marriage between music and collage.
Objectives:
Learn the specific methods of collage utilized by the instructor
Engage with contemporary methods of collagemaking, as well as historical applications
Connect visual art and music
Explore personal histories through photo and/or personal writings
Create one permanent collage to take home
Prerequisites: None
Course Prep:
Students are encouraged to bring to class family/personal archives (photo, writing, etc.) they would like to collage together with printouts of their own imagery.
