Locations: MFAH Hirsch Library & Houston Center for Photography

Instructors: Alexa Becker & Jon Evans

Skill Level: Intermediate

This one-day, two-part workshop offers photographers a deep dive into the creative and technical aspects of photobook design, as well as personalized project development feedback. The goal is to empower participants to better understand the book as a medium and to help them advance their own photography projects. The workshop begins with an inspiring exploration of a thoughtfully curated selection of photobooks from the Hirsch Library at the MFAH, led by Alexa Becker and Jon Evans. The second part of the workshop shifts the focus to the participants’ own photography projects, allowing them to apply discussed insights to their personal work. This hand-on workshop will be shaped by a dynamic, dialogue-driven exchange between the instructors and participants, helping students imagine how their projects will translate into photobooks.

Objectives:

  • Learn about photobook design elements and creative strategies

  • Understand binding & printing techniques as well as paper choices

  • Experience first hand how form supports content in successful book projects

  • Receive expert support for your own project editing and sequencing

  • Get an in-depth review of a curated selection from the Hirsch Library’s collection

  • Participate in engaging artistic discourse

Prerequisites

Participants should love photobooks and have a project/series they might want to publish in a book format.

Course Prep:

The class will meet at 9:45 AM in the lobby entrance of the Beck parking garage on 1144 Binz Street (parking fees are not included in the tuition). Participants should bring a current project for review and discussion (print form highly preferred). Additional instructions will be emailed by the instructor before the workshop.
