Skill Level: Intermediate - Advanced

Photobooks offer photographers a powerful way to shape their projects’ narratives, visual language, and conceptual depth into long-lasting artistic objects. How does a photographic project become a photobook? And, how can the design be both distinctive and financially practical?

This 10 session course guides participants through the process of conceiving, photographing, designing, and printing one or more original photobooks. Through illustrated lectures and the presentation of actual books, course participants will be introduced to a wide range of classic and contemporary photobooks. The book printing processes, book-related papers, fabrics, and other materials relating to the manufacture of photobooks will be covered in detail. With the guidance of the instructor, students will develop their personal projects, translate them into a book design, and create their initial photobook dummy using an online print-on-demand printer (such as Blurb.com).

Objectives:

  • Edit and sequence your photographs to build a compelling visual narrative

  • Develop the physical “identity” of your book - format, cover, binding, and materials

  • Articulate the core ideas and themes of your project through concise and effective texts

  • Consider creative options for using texts with images

  • Design one (or more) photobooks based on your work

  • Create a photobook dummy to present to potential publishers or exhibition visitors

  • Expand your artistic background and participate in photo critiques

Prerequisites

Participants can apply this class to a project/series they wish to publish in a book format or create a new series for a photobook during the course. All camera types and formats are welcome.

Course Prep:

For the first class, students who already have a photo project underway and hope to develop that into a book should bring a selection of 10-20 images (prints or digital files) representing that work. Others should come prepared to discuss a range of possible book ideas they might pursue during the course.
