Over the past 25 years, scholarly awareness and appreciation for the photobook has grown tremendously. Likewise, the production of well-conceived and executed photobooks has reached new levels by photographers and designers intent on sharing their photo-centric narratives with increasingly astute readers and viewers of the genre. This workshop focuses on recent developments in photobook conception, design, and construction. Join Jon Evans, the Chief of Libraries & Archives at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, as he shares select contemporary highlights from the rich photobook collection at the MFAH. Participants will have the opportunity to study these works alongside works from the Museum’s internationally recognized photography collection. This workshop will take place at the MFAH.

Objectives:

  • Recognize what constitutes a photobook and learn about recent developments in the form

  • Identify key components of well-conceived, designed, and constructed contemporary photobooks

  • Better understand the interconnected history of photography and photobooks

  • Learn about the various processes used to create photobooks

  • Get an insider’s view of the Hirsch Library’s collection at the MFAH

  • Develop a deeper appreciation for photobooks of all types

Prerequisites: None

Course Prep:

Participants are encouraged to bring pencils, paper, laptops, and an open mind. Students are strongly encouraged to review a modest reading list (will be emailed before the workshop) as a basis for discussions.
