Lighting II: Commercial & Editorial Photography (Apr 9-May 28)
Dates: April 9 - May 28, 2026
Meetings: Thursdays, 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM CST (8 sessions)
Location: Fred Agho’s Studio
Cost: $590 Tuition + $50 Materials (HCP members can receive a 10% discount)

Lighting is the silent architect of contemporary commercial and editorial photography–shaping moods and transforming ordinary scenes into striking visual narratives that command attention and emotion. In this course, students will learn advanced lighting techniques and creative aspects of editorial, fashion, advertising, and product photography with the intention of applying those skills to editorial photoshoots, brand identities, and marketing campaigns. Working with Fred Agho in his studio, participants will experiment with mixed-source lighting setups and learn to maintain a professional tethered photography workflow. Participants will strengthen studio practices and gain valuable experience in producing a variety of image styles– allowing students to further develop their portfolios.
Objectives:
Create and modify lighting setups using multiple light sources to achieve your vision
Apply and practice a tethered photoshoot workflow
Adjust to challenging product surfaces by applying creative solutions and accessories
Photograph professional editorial portraits in various environments
Gain experience in a professional fashion photography production
Collaborate with a production team including creative directors, digi-techs, hair & makeup artists, and photography assistants
Discuss the importance of artistic concept as it relates to advertising and brand identity
Develop your artistic background and personal portfolio
Prerequisites:
Lighting I or having at least initial experience in a lighting studio environment and being comfortable using studio lighting including continuous lighting and strobes
Course Prep:
For the first class, students should bring 5 pictures representative of their photographic practice and 1-3 photos with lighting they hope to learn to set up. Students need to bring their DSLR or Mirrorless camera ready to photograph for each class.
