Our understanding of what constitutes documentary photography has changed and shifted over its history. Students in this course will be encouraged to consider the breadth of options offered by contemporary documentary practice and think broadly about how to represent their subjects. Group feedback sessions on the photographs made outside of class will help students develop their photographic voice and learn to ask the essential and hard questions about documentary practice. The class also includes presentations on project development as well as on contemporary practitioners of documentary photography.

Objectives:

  • Start or continue developing a personal project based on documentary photography

  • Strengthen your approach to the creation of a long-term documentary project

  • Grow your ability to create strong photographs that fit the project's content

  • Expand the range of materials you consider for your personal project

  • Broaden your understanding of contemporary documentary photographic practice

  • Engage in critical discussions reviewing the work of all the students

  • Receive valuable feedback from your instructor and peers

Students are encouraged to arrive to the course with one (or more) idea(s) for a personal project.
