Do you want to publish a photobook but don't know where to start? Or are photobooks your passion and you'd like to discover publications pushing this art form forward? Join this course to explore a wide range of contemporary and historical photobooks from around the world. Students will explore how photographers have presented their work in book form and acquire tools to improve their abilities to edit, sequence, and design a book of their own photography. Together we will examine book development in depth, from beginnings and endings, pairing images, constructing passages of photographs, basic layout and design considerations, and much more.
Objectives:
Learn how to “read” photobooks while identifying key artistic and practical choices
Improve your image sequencing skills considering content and layout
Understand materiality considerations as part of book development
Explore the relationship between book design and projects’ concepts
Discuss how your work can be translated into book format and practical next steps
Expand your knowledge of contemporary photobook presses, designers, and artists
Prerequisites:
This course is open to photographers and non-photographers alike. Students can have a personal project they would like to consider for publication, but this is not a must.
Course Prep:
For the first class, students should be ready to share a favorite photo book that was published in the last 10 years and explain why they appreciate it.
