Overwhelmed by the photography market and don’t know where to begin? Thinking of buying your first photograph with the idea to build a collection? This 5-part course, led by pioneer collector Alice Sachs Zimet, guides participants through everything they need to know to start (or expand!) their collection. Whether you are a beginner, a more seasoned collector, or a photographer curious to learn about the market, this course is for you!
Take advantage of this rare opportunity to peek into the collector’s mind offering abundant insider tips gathered across 40 years of collecting. Each session focuses on a different subject — the questions to ask before you spend a penny (signature indications, negative vs print date, condition reports, etc), how to buy at an auction, a virtual visit with a prominent dealer, and more. For the final session, students will research an image they (hypothetically?) might consider buying and present it to the class. Abundant handouts provided.
Objectives:
Understand the ‘collector’s mindset’ and the decision-making process
Discuss in depth the key questions to ask before buying a photograph
Realize the ‘do’s & don’ts’ of the photography market
Get a perspective about the auction process and bid successfully
Receive important tips from an experienced collector prior to purchasing prints
Help craft the character of your collection
Learn how to research and analyze potential photographs to purchase
Prerequisites: None
Course Prep: None
