The Business of Photography (Dec 13)

$195.00

Date: December 13, 2025

Meeting: Saturday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM CST

Location: Houston Center for Photography

Cost: $195 (HCP members can receive a 10% discount)

Instructor: Joe Aker

Skill Level: Open to All Levels

Becoming a successful photographer is not just about taking photos. It is a business!  It is about doing everything that is required by State and Federal law, good accounting practices, prompt invoicing and payment collection, managing customer relations, insurance, correct pricing of your work, and the organization of your business.  All studies show that most companies fail because of bad business practices. In this day-long course, we will review both State and Federal laws including tax requirements, accounting procedures, and needed insurance. Students will understand how to organize their photography business and how to price their work/services. Most importantly, we will discuss how to handle bad situations with clients when they do occur.  Keeping a client is always better than having to find a new one.  Starting right is the best way to ensure the longevity of your photographic practice.

Objectives:

  • Understand how to set up the business part of your photography company

  • Review all Federal and State requirements including Tax reporting and payments

  • Adopt the best accounting practices including invoicing and collection

  • Realize the importance of good customer relations and how to handle your clients

  • Understand how to price your photographic services and/or the licensing of your images

Prerequisites: None

Course Prep:

Students should be prepared to take notes during class. In addition, students should bring any business plan they may have previously had.
