











Introduction to Visual Journalism and Storytelling (Oct 19-Nov 23)
Dates: October 19 - November 23, 2025 (no class November 2)
Meetings: Sundays, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM CST (5 sessions)

Cost: $490 Tuition + $20 Materials (HCP members receive a 10% discount)

Storytelling and journalism have developed significantly in the past couple of decades and are now based on visual components more than ever before. This course is designed to help students get started in the field of photojournalism by acquiring important background and techniques. Topics include how photojournalists are hired, what gear and software to use, how to obtain access, journalism ethics, how to find and develop an impactful story, editing & sequencing and so much more! Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to see real-life examples of different assignments and meet Houston Chronicle Photographers and Editors. Students are expected to complete assignments and present them in class.
Objectives:
Understanding the basics of Visual Journalism and the Newsroom
Review recommended software & gear
Realize important Journalism Ethical guidelines
Consider the importance of building relationships in the newsroom and on the field
Learn how to find and develop a story to create an impact
Acquire initial skills in Editing & Sequencing
Receive important resources for visual journalists from NPPA
Discuss the past, present, and future Visual Journalism
Prerequisites:
Photography I or being comfortable using your camera in Manual mode. Having some experience with editing and/or processing images is a plus.
Course Prep:
For the first class, students need to send a selection of 8-10 pictures representing their photographic portfolio and interests. Submission instructions will be emailed before the start of the course.
