Step into the vibrant world of flash photography with Landon Nordeman, a celebrated editorial and commercial photographer recognized for his striking imagery and masterful lighting. Nordeman’s distinctive approach transforms everyday moments into surreal, hyper-realistic images that feel candid yet are carefully composed. In this masterclass, he will demonstrate how flash can be used to heighten atmosphere and meaning in events, parties, and social gatherings, elevating documentation into a form of visual storytelling that is both bold and engaging. Participants will explore how the deliberate use of artificial light can heighten color, freeze movement, and create a unique tension between the real and the theatrical.
Combining lecture, image analysis, and practical exercises, Nordeman will share insights drawn from his extensive career across high-profile editorial and commercial contexts. Participants will gain an understanding of the technical and aesthetic considerations of flash (exposure, direction, and timing) while exploring how creative lighting can reveal, amplify, and reframe reality. This masterclass positions flash not simply as a functional necessity, but as a powerful means of shaping images that resonate with depth and intensity.
Objectives:
Get comfortable photographing with a flash and go for the pictures you want
Improve your skills of using flashes while photographing an event
Learn how to improvise and experiment in the moment
Photograph powerful, engaging pictures that stand out
Understand how to tell the story of an event with lyrical photographs
Get an insider’s perspective and useful, practical recommendations regarding the exciting world of editorial assignments
Prerequisites:
Students must have an initial experience (at least) photographing using a flash and be able to use a flash that works with their camera during the workshop. Familiarity with Adobe Lightroom Classic is recommended but not a must.
Course Prep:
Leave your ego at home and the past behind you. Be ready to experiment with flash photography, leading to exciting discoveries about what you can do.
